Fathering Adventures

When looking around for holiday options for solo parents we came across a web site called Fathering Adventures and thought it sounded like a wonderful idea so we contacted them to learn more and here’s what we found out.

Fathering Adventures provide 2 night Father Son Adventures for boys aged between 7 and 13 years, and their dad, or significant male other and 5 night Adventures for young men aged from 13 years and their dad, or significant male other.

A typical day on a Fathering Adventure features an exceptionally full-day, a professionally-guided outdoor adventure or activity such as white-water rafting down the Tully River, snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, dual sea kayaking between Mission Beach and Dunk Island, and hiking to the summit of Mount Tyson. But rest assured, these outdoor activities cater for all fitness levels. A typical evening features a presentation and small group interaction based around relationship building and restoration followed by time relaxing around the fire sharing stories of the day’s adventures. The trips are fully catered and accommodation is in a cabin arrangement.

Fathering Adventures was founded by Darren Lewis (dad to 4 boys) in mid 2008, Darren grew up in an alcoholic home and overcoming this became his motivation to play a part in making sure this generation of children, and those that follow, experience excellent relationships with their dad’s and hence Fathering Adventures was born.

The trips provide a chance to get away from it all, to have a break and importantly to build on relationships that in our busy day to day lives often get overlooked and to spend some quality time together, as Darren says ‘Sadly, research reveals that on average, a child spends only 8 minutes per day with his or her father.’

When asked about why he started Fathering Adventures Darren quotes their Vision Statement ‘To provide an enjoyable, exciting, adventure-filled environment for a father to succeed, be inspired, equipped, and empowered, to really connect, or perhaps reconnect with their child. A life-giving, life-changing experience that promises to provide moments that will create powerful memories to last a lifetime, and opportunities to fill a photo album’.

It becomes obvious that Darren’s Vision is being realised when you hear the feedback from past participants:

"It’s been good to spend time with Dad without any distractions. I’ve gotten to know him a whole lot better. All of the activities were fun… especially the white-water rafting. Dad sacrificed his time and money to bring me here. That shows me that he really loves me and wants the best for me." (Dan– Age 15)

"This weekend has shown me that I am special." Ethan (Age 7)

"This time has meant so much more to my son than I anticipated it would. I really appreciate having had this opportunity." Gary (Age 40)

Wow Darren, it sounds like you are doing an amazing job of reconnecting Dad’s with their sons and providing some great adventures along the way - we may have to send up a TWT dad and son for a first hand account! For more info on Fathering Adventures see the website www.fatheringadventures.com.au
