Memmo Baleeira Hotel in Sagres, Portugal

We stayed at the Memmo Baleeira Hotel in Sagres, a 144 room hotel located on Portugal’s Algarve Coast. This is what we thought:

Portugal is one of my favourite places on this planet and a stay at the gorgeous Memmo Baleeira hotel has just cemented that opinion. Memmo is a small boutique hotel located in Sagres at the very end of the Algarve and Europe’s western most point (in fact Sagres is known locally as the ‘end of the world’).

Sagres is a sleepy little village away from the madness that tends to engulf some other parts of the Algarve in the European summer months. It doesn’t have a lot of traffic for you to worry about the kids with and all of the local restaurants are laid back and most welcome kids (many are run by families so their own babies and kids are present). Sagres is a bit of a hike from Water parks and the likes so you will probably want to hire a car (We hired a car at Faro airport with a car seat included and keeping the car for a week worked out to be the same price as return transfers for the family.)

Memmo Baleeira is located on the cliff tops of Baleeira harbour overlooking the ocean and is walking distance to some of the region’s best (and quietest) beaches. Kids are welcomed at the hotel and travel cots can be provided (you do need to reserve them in advance though.)

There is both an outdoor pool and an indoor pool. The indoor pool has set hours for kids to allow them to scream and shout and splash to their little hearts content without upsetting other swimmers. Babysitting can be arranged with prior notice. Hotel rooms are not too much of a safety nightmare with babies, there are balconies in the rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors but ground floor rooms can be requested (or balcony doors left locked) if you are worried.

Memmo is not strictly a ‘family’ hotel but they go out of their way to make kids feel welcome. The hotel has a kind of mini kids club in the summer months and provides activities like painting, outdoor games and kids movies. Kid’s menus are also available at the hotels pool side café and restaurant.

Housekeeping staff seem to appear the minute you leave your room which is great it means no interrupted naps for the little ones and nothing is too much trouble for the reception staff, and they were happy to order taxis and suggest places to eat in Sagres and the surrounding areas.

Breakfast is a fabulous buffet with a huge selection of pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals, eggs, bacon and all the trimmings all with a gorgeous view of the ocean. There is a beauty spa onsite and this mummy would highly recommend the coconut body treatment you will feel and (smell) divine afterwards and Memmo can organise someone to mind your child while you get pampered…what’s not to love?
